Arrowleaf Balsamroot Seed - Inland Northwest Wildflowers - 1 gram

Arrowleaf Balsamroot seed is from Inland Northwest wildflowers that are gathered and grown on the Palouse in Idaho. The Arrowleaf Balsamroot is an early spring bloomer. This long-lived perennial has a deep root, bright yellow ray flowers and long green arrowhead-shapped leaves.

  • Common name: arrowleaf balsamroot
  • Scientific name: Balsamorhiza sagittata
  • Duration: Perennial
  • Family: Asteraceae
  • Habitat: Open hillsides and flats and lightly wooded areas
  • Blooming period: Early spring
  • Color: Yellow flower heads
  • Height: 24"

Blooms in early spring. Long lived perennial with a deep taproot that makes this plant highly drought tolerant. Individual plants can live more than 100 years!

    Planting Instructions:
    • Sow seeds directly in the ground at 1/8" in late fall as these seeds require a period of cold moist conditions for successful germination. Seeds will sprout in the spring!
    • Maintain a moist seed bed in the spring; gradually reducing watering following the first year of establishment.
    • Does not transplant due to long taproot.
    Site Preparation:

Remove weeds and other vegetation prior to planting; rake seed bed. Mix small seeds with sand to achieve a more even distribution. Sprinkle seeds in prepared area, rake over, and lightly tamp down soil to ensure good soil contact with seeds. Cover lightly with weed-free mulch, especially when fall seeding. Diligent weed removal will increase germination and growth of these seeds. In the spring, maintain a moist seed bed; gradually reducing irrigation after the first year of establishment is completed. No fertilizer or other soil amendments are needed. Be patient - perennial natives focus energy to the roots the first year!
